United States: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that young American women ignore pregnancy risks, causing decreased fertility rates in the United States.

More about the news

According to data in the National Vital Statistics Reports published by the CDC, the main discovery showed that actual U.S. births decreased by 14% while fertility was reduced by 23%.

Recent research demonstrates that the main cause of the decrease in the birth rate is women aged 30 or less, according to statistical data.

According to US News reports, in 1990, women aged 30 or below contributed 70 percent (7 out of 10) to all annual births.

The total percentage of US births controlled by women under 30 years old decreased to 49% in 2023.

What more are the experts stating?

Research data show that birth declines among younger female populations surpassed the minimal increase in birth rates among women reaching thirty years of age.

According to the research team lead and the senior researcher, Brady Hamilton of the CDC’s Division of Vital Statistics, “In summary, the decline in fertility rates over the past few decades results from declining rates among females younger than 30 that are offset somewhat by smaller increases in rates among older women,” US News reported.

Research data was retrieved from National Vital Statistics System birth data files during the period from 1990 up to 2023.

The analyzed data represents all births registered in the 50 states together with the District of Columbia.

Declining birth rate in the US

The total US birth count decreased by 14% from 4.16 million to approximately 3.6 million over this specified period.

Health statistics show that the natural birth rate declined significantly from around 71 per 1,000 women to under 55 per 1,000 women.

Birth statistics for young women aged below thirty declined significantly during the 1990 to 2023 time period.

  1. From 70% down to 49% among women younger than 30.
  1. From 39% down to 21% among women younger than 25.
  1. From 13% down to 4% among teenagers younger than 20.

Women from ages 30 to 34 demonstrated a 24% increase in births, while women between 35 and 39 showed a 90% rise, and those 40 and older had a 193% growth in the birth rate based on statistics.

“Because the declines in birth rates of younger women, who account for the majority of births, outweighed the increases in rates of women age 30 and older, the overall (fertility rate) and the number of births declined,” mentioned the researcher, as the US News reported.
